Course Overview: This class is intended for health care workers who plan to challenge the California NCLEX-VN exam. Persons with “equivalent” experience (51 months in an acute care facility), and a 54 hour pharmacology course may be eligible to take the LVN board exam. This course is designed to meet the 54 hour pharmacology requirement for eligibility.

 

60 Hour Pharmacology Theory Course includes
• Knowledge of commonly used drugs and their action
• Computation of dosages
• Preparation of medications
• Principles of administration of medications


Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, the individual shall demonstrate minimal entry level competency necessary to safely administer medications by:


1. Introduction and overview
2. How to study pharmacology and drug administration
3. Drug calculations
4. The nursing process in drug administration
5. General principles of pharmacology
6. Representative drugs that affect the body as a whole or individual body systems

      • Nervous system drugs
      • Autonomic nervous system drugs
      • Endocrine system drugs
      • Anti-infective Drugs
      • Respiratory system drugs
      • Cardiovascular system drugs
      • Digestive system drugs
      •  
      • Drugs for the eyes and skin
      • This course is challenging and require devoting at least 54 clock hours of self study. Student must be motivated to invest time for self study and be able to function in a primarily independent distance education online environment.

        A passing score of 80% must be obtained to successfully complete course.


        At course completion, the student is issued a certificate for completion stating number of theory and/or clinical hours. All activities are designed to enhance the learning.

        Successful completion of this course does not guarantee eligibility to take the NCLEX-VN by the Board of Vocational Nursing, it is the student's responsibility to ensure that his or her qualifications meet the California BVNPT  requirements. This course meets all the criteria dictated by the California BVNPT .
